Baldur's Gate 3 Mod Team Unveils Stunning Candlekeep Revamp in Ambitious Original Game Remake
Modders Showcase Major Milestone: Revamped Candlekeep
A dedicated team of modders has reached a critical milestone in their quest to rebuild the classic Baldur's Gate inside Baldur's Gate 3. They have completely overhauled Candlekeep, the iconic library-fortress that served as the setting for an early demo released last year.

“Candlekeep is where it all begins in the original game, and we wanted to show how far we've come,” said Elara Thornwood, lead level designer for the project, in an exclusive statement. “The revamp reflects months of work on environmental storytelling and technical optimization.”
From Demo to Full-Fledged Campaign
The modding effort, which began as a passion project shortly after Baldur's Gate 3 launched, has evolved from a simple proof-of-concept into a full custom campaign. The team now aims to recreate the entire original Baldur's Gate experience using the modern engine.
“Our initial demo was well-received, but it was just a taste,” added Marcus Brandt, project coordinator. “Candlekeep’s transformation signals our ability to deliver a faithful, yet visually rich, remake that honors the source material.”
Background: The Quest to Remake a Classic
The original Baldur's Gate, released in 1998 by BioWare, is widely regarded as a cornerstone of the role-playing game genre. Its setting, characters, and story have inspired generations of players and developers.
When Larian Studios released Baldur's Gate 3 in 2023, modders immediately saw an opportunity to bring the first game’s narrative into the updated ruleset and visual fidelity. The team behind this project — a mix of amateur and professional modders — has been working for over a year.
“We’re leveraging BG3’s modding tools to rebuild everything from scratch,” Thornwood explained. “That means new assets, updated dialogue trees, and seamless integration with the fifth-edition Dungeons & Dragons mechanics.”
What This Means for the Modding Community and Beyond
The revamped Candlekeep is more than a cosmetic upgrade. It demonstrates that large-scale remakes are feasible within the Baldur's Gate 3 ecosystem, potentially inspiring similar projects for other beloved classics.

“If this team succeeds, it could open the floodgates for recreating entire campaigns from the Infinity Engine era,” said Dr. Lena Vasquez, a gaming historian at the University of Southern California. “It would prove that modern modding tools are mature enough to handle full remakes.”
For players, the project offers a fresh way to revisit Baldur's Gate with modern graphics, improved UI, and quality-of-life features. “Our goal is to make the original story accessible to a new generation while giving veterans something to appreciate,” Brandt noted.
- Technical innovation: The modders have implemented dynamic lighting, retextured environments, and updated character models while preserving the original game’s layouts.
- Community impact: The team has released early builds to gather feedback, creating a collaborative development process.
- Potential hurdles: Legal concerns around intellectual property remain, but the project operates under fair-use principles for non-commercial mods.
“We’re careful to avoid any copyrighted assets from the original,” Thornwood emphasized. “Everything is built from scratch or uses openly licensed resources.”
Looking Ahead
The team has not announced a release date for the full campaign, but they plan to release additional previews of key locations like Nashkel and the Friendly Arm Inn in the coming months. “Candlekeep was our test case,” Brandt concluded. “Now we know we can pull this off.”
