Marathon's End-of-Season Overhaul: Big Loot Changes and Permanent Improvements

Introduction: A New Era for Marathon's Progression

After dozens of hours in Marathon, many players hit a frustrating wall. Quests grow into sprawling multi-step treks, and high-tier upgrades demand rare items that appear only a handful of times. Bungie has heard these complaints and is rolling out a major end-of-season update on May 19 that aims to smooth out the grind and make the loot loop more rewarding. From guaranteed room keys to a permanent raid opening, here's everything you need to know about the changes headed to Tau Ceti.

Locked Room Keys: From Unicorn to Common Drop

One of the biggest pain points has been the locked room keys—extremely rare items that grant access to the best loot rooms on Tau Ceti. Starting May 19, these keys will become guaranteed drops from Wardens for the remainder of Season 1. According to Bungie's blog post, map events such as Intercept, Lockdown, Warden spawns, Convoy, and Anomaly will also appear on every run, ensuring you benefit from their superior rewards more frequently.

Additionally, Warden bosses will now spawn at more locations on Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost. What was once an elusive drop for the lucky few will now become a regular part of your loot pool—a welcome change for anyone tired of hitting dead ends in progression.

Cryo Archive: Always Open, Ranked Mode Added

The raid map Cryo Archive has long been locked behind limited-time windows, but that's changing. For the remainder of Season 1, Cryo Archive will be available 24/7—no more waiting for specific rotation days. Bungie is also introducing a Ranked Cryo Archive playlist, featuring two buy-in tiers: a low-stakes option at 3,000 credits and a high-stakes option at 10,000 credits. This gives competitive players a new way to test their skills and earn big rewards.

Faster Progression Across the Board

Faction experience gains are being increased across the board for the rest of Season 1. This means you'll unlock faction perks and rewards much faster, easing the mid-game slog that has plagued many players. Bungie is also making several quality-of-life improvements to help you spend less time on busywork and more time enjoying the action.

Key Templates No Longer Break on Down

Previously, if you were downed while carrying a key template, the template would break, forcing you to start over. After the update, templates will remain intact even if you fall. To complete the transformation into a working key, you'll need to find a Matter Fixative item dropped by UESC bots—similar to holding onto your free kit in a Rook run. This small change removes a major frustration for solo players and squads alike.

Wall Safes Drop Deluxe Keys

Wall safes, often overlooked, will now have a chance to drop deluxe keys. This adds another layer of opportunity for players who explore every corner, turning mundane loot containers into potential goldmines.

Quick Rook Runs Get More Convenient

For players running Quick Rook missions, the Signal Mask ability will now last longer while sprinting. This makes it easier to stay concealed during fast-paced escapes, reducing the risk of detection and speeding up completions.

What's Temporary vs. Permanent?

Bungie has explicitly stated that some of these changes are only for the remainder of Season 1, but the studio has a pattern of experimenting with tweaks that later become permanent. Based on past behavior, it's likely that many of these adjustments—especially the faster faction progression—will stick around for Season 2 and beyond. The blog post emphasizes that faction progression speed is definitely going to be increased on a lasting basis.

Looking Ahead: Season 2: Nightfall

Season 2: Nightfall begins on June 2, bringing a slew of new content. Highlights include the new Night Marsh zone, a fresh Runner shell, new weapons, and a brand-new system for customizing your Runner shell's stats called The Cradle. Alongside faster faction progression, Bungie promises several quality-of-life updates based on community feedback. Full reveals are scheduled for the week of May 25, so stay tuned for more details.

With these end-of-season changes, Marathon is turning its loot dial to 11—and giving players a much-needed boost before the next chapter begins.
