Motorola Unveils $1,900 Book-Style Foldable: razr fold With Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, 6000 mAh Battery

Motorola today announced its first book-style foldable smartphone, the razr fold, priced at $1,900. The device features Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, 16GB of RAM, a massive 6,000 mAh battery, and 80W wired charging.

The launch marks a strategic pivot for the company, which has exclusively sold flip-style foldables for over five years. The razr fold opens like a book, revealing a tablet-like inner display.

“This is a watershed moment for Motorola,” said industry analyst Priya Mehta of TechAxiom. “They’re finally moving beyond the clamshell to directly challenge Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series.”

Motorola has not yet announced a release date. The device is expected to ship in select markets within weeks.

The new book-style design was rumored for months. Leaks suggested an internal project named “Felix” that aimed to rival the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Today’s official reveal confirms those rumors with even higher specs than anticipated.

“Motorola’s engineering team spent two years perfecting the hinge mechanism,” said a company spokesperson who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We wanted zero gap when closed and a crease-free inner screen.”

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset—Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor—promises a 30% performance improvement over the previous generation. The 6,000 mAh battery is among the largest ever fitted to a foldable phone.

What This Means

With these specs, the razr fold is positioned as a premium productivity device. The 80W charging can replenish the battery from 0 to 100% in about 45 minutes.

Industry experts believe Motorola is testing the waters for a broader ecosystem. “If this sells well, expect a razr line that includes both flip and book-style models,” said mobile analyst David Kim of ResearchMobile.

The $1,900 price tag matches Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 and undercuts some competitors. Motorola is betting that superior hardware—especially the battery and charging speed—will convince buyers to switch.

Reaction From Competitors

Samsung declined to comment. One unnamed executive at rival brand Oppo called the launch “an impressive but late entry into a crowded field.”
