Breaking: Swift Community Establishes Official Windows Workgroup

The Swift open-source project today announced the formation of a dedicated Windows workgroup, signaling a major commitment to bringing Swift's safety and performance to Windows developers. This new initiative aims to ensure ongoing, community-driven support for Swift on the Windows platform.

The workgroup will focus on toolchain stability, library enhancements, and bridging between Swift and Windows API conventions. Its creation underscores the growing demand among developers for cross-platform Swift capabilities that include robust Windows integration.

Key Mandate and Immediate Priorities

According to the Swift project leadership, the Windows workgroup will “improve and maintain Windows support for the official Swift distribution” and recommend enhancements to core packages like Foundation and Dispatch to align with Windows idioms. The group will also chart future directions for Windows support and define best practices for shipping Swift libraries within Windows applications.

“This workgroup is a critical step in making Swift a first-class language for Windows development,” said a Swift project representative. “We’ve seen tremendous community interest since Windows became an officially supported platform in 2020, and now we’re formalizing the effort to ensure it thrives.”

“This is exactly what the Windows Swift community needed,” added Maria Chen, a Windows developer and early adopter of Swift on the platform. “Having a dedicated workgroup means we can systematically address pain points like library compatibility and toolchain stability—things that were previously handled ad hoc.”

Background: Swift on Windows

Swift has been an officially supported platform on Windows since 2020. Since then, the Visual Studio Code extension has added Windows support, and developers have used Swift’s interoperability features to build native Windows applications. A 2023 blog post highlighted how Swift’s interoperability with C and Windows APIs enables seamless development.

The new workgroup builds on that foundation and joins a growing list of Swift workgroups, including the Android workgroup, Build and Packaging workgroup, and Testing workgroup—all added within the past year. These community-led, formally recognized groups help drive key areas of the Swift ecosystem forward.

What This Means for Developers

For Windows developers, the workgroup ensures that Swift will receive ongoing, community-driven maintenance and improvements. This includes better integration with Windows-specific features such as WinRT and COM, as well as more reliable tooling for building, debugging, and deploying Swift code on Windows.

Additionally, the workgroup will create guidelines for packaging Swift libraries within Windows apps, making it easier to deploy cross-platform solutions. Over time, these efforts could position Swift as a serious alternative for enterprise Windows development, alongside C# and C++.

How to Get Involved

The workgroup holds meetings every other Wednesday at 9:00 AM PT. All meetings are open, and contributors of all skill levels are welcome. To participate:

  • Join the discussion on the Swift forums in the Windows category.
  • Read the workgroup charter for full details.
  • To receive meeting invites, message @windows-workgroup on the Swift forums.

The Swift project encourages any developer interested in Windows-native Swift development to join and help shape the future of the platform.
